Aly first saw light of day during the earth-shattering events of 1492, subject to the traumas of being born a slave into a rich family, and having to flee for his life to the yet greater horrors of the Caribbean. There, the genocide of the native people made of him a clandestine assassin, a much sought after artist, and an ardent lover of powerful women, not least of whom was Princess Elizabeth Tudor, who he helped put on the throne of England – as the famous ‘Virgin Queen’!
The astonishing story of this unsung warrior has been reconstructed from hidden annotations in many hundreds of paintings, many of them painted by Aly himself. He worked under a number of noms-de-plume, avatars he used to infiltrate royal courts across the continent of Europe, and where he discovered what the legendary names of history were up to. Those who were causing great mischief to the world, he then brought to a speedy and premature end.
When he died, in his eighties, his renown was scattered among his many aliases, and he as a character evaporated from history, along with the true story of those passionate times. True story, for what we believe of those times today was very, very far from what happened. Our history books, alas, are full of what the rich and mendacious of the time wanted us to believe, but now, for the first time in five hundred years, thanks to modern technology, the messages he and others left in those great works of art can be read, and the amazing truth can be told.
